Thomson, Ga. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is delivering resources to improve quality of life for families in Thomson and McDuffie County.
Today, Sen. Ossoff announced he is delivering Federal funding to help Thomson and McDuffie County expand sanitary sewer service to more families. Sen. Ossoff brought Republicans and Democrats together to deliver $1,100,000 for the project through this year’s bipartisan government funding package.
“I’m delivering new resources to upgrade services for families in Thomson and McDuffie County. I will continue working to secure upgrades for Georgia’s infrastructure to keep communities safe and upgrade quality of life,” Sen. Ossoff said. “I thank Chairman Charlie Newton and the entire McDuffie County Commission for bringing this proposal to my office and for their leadership in the community.”
Since 2018, local leaders have been working to address the public health issue for its residents dealing with failing septic systems along sections of Wrightsboro Road. According to local leaders, initial estimates for replacing those septic systems with sanitary sewer have nearly doubled in recent years. This led officials to make the difficult decision to shift the project into two sections to best utilize available funding.
The $1.1 million will be used to extend sanitary sewer to the Ridgeview Drive area, as well as Daggett Road and Hamilton Drive, allowing the community to complete the entire project.
“This is tremendous news for these residents and our entire community,” said McDuffie County Commission Chairman Charlie Newton. “We initially had to split the project into two parts to make sure we had appropriate funding. We didn’t want anyone to have to wait for sewer service in this area, so this money will absolutely help change the lives of these residents.”
According to local officials, crews recently started work on the $1.54 million first phase of the project, which includes Pope Street, Short Street, West Circle, Crawford Avenue and a section of Wrightsboro Road. In total, the project will serve more than 90 homes in the area at a cost of more than $2.6 million.
“The support we received from Sen. Ossoff’s office has been tremendous,” said Chairman Newton. “When we began discussing this specific need, they listened intently and worked with us to develop a potential funding plan. That was a year ago, and they have kept us in constant communication through the process to make the funding a reality. We appreciate their commitment and partnership on this effort. It allows us to completely fulfill a promise we made these residents years ago.”
