Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is working across the aisle to hire more law enforcement personnel to protect Georgia communities.
A bipartisan bill co-sponsored by Sen. Ossoff recently passed the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee that would establish Federal grants to help law enforcement agencies hire retired law enforcement agents to assist with civilian tasks.
The bipartisan bill would help agencies hire experienced personnel for tasks that do not require a sworn officer, including homicide, carjacking, and financial crimes investigations; reviewing camera footage; conducting crime scene analysis; and more.
The bipartisan bill now heads to the full Senate for consideration.
“I hear consistently from sheriffs and police chiefs across Georgia about dangerous staffing shortages that threaten public safety in communities across the state,” Sen. Ossoff said. “We are working on a bipartisan basis to help law enforcement agencies hire retired personnel for key positions and strengthen public safety across the state.”
Last year, Sens. Ossoff and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) introduced the bipartisan Filling Public Safety Vacancies Act to help law enforcement agencies reduce staffing shortages and effectively protect communities.
In 2022, Sens. Ossoff and Chuck Grassley (R-IA)’s bipartisan TBI and PTSD Law Enforcement Training Act to fund trainings for first responders, crisis intervention teams, mental health courts, and other programs that help law enforcement assist individuals experiencing mental illness became law.
