Washington, D.C. — In a historic step, U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff’s bipartisan bill to ban stock trading by Members of Congress today passed a key U.S. Senate committee.
Today, following years of leadership in Congress, Sen. Ossoff’s bipartisan bill to ban stock trading by Members of Congress passed the U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (HSGAC) with bipartisan support — the first-time a Congressional Stock Trading ban has ever passed a U.S. Senate Committee.
Sen. Ossoff’s bipartisan bill now advances to the full U.S. Senate for consideration.
“This is a historic moment in efforts to reform the ethics laws that govern Congress. Georgians overwhelmingly agree that Members of Congress should not be playing the stock market while we legislate and while we have access to confidential and privileged information,” Sen. Ossoff said. “This is long overdue and necessary, and today we made historic progress passing my bipartisan bill out of Committee.”

Sen. Ossoff has been leading efforts in Congress for years to ban Members of Congress from trading stocks.
Earlier this month, Sen. Ossoff, Chairman Gary Peters (D-MI), Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), and Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), announced that HSGAC, on which Sen. Ossoff serves, would consider the bipartisan compromise in a hearing.
Sen. Ossoff, a former investigative journalist whose company exposed corruption around the world, has been leading efforts in Congress for years to ban stock trading by Members of Congress and has led by example.
In 2022 and again last year, Sens. Ossoff and Mark Kelly (D-AZ) introduced leading legislation to ban stock trading by Members of Congress.
Polls repeatedly find the majority of Americans, including Republicans, Independents, and Democrats, overwhelmingly support banning stock trading by Members of Congress.
