Sen. Ossoff raised the issue with AG-nominee Merrick Garland in February
Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff released the following statement on the Department of Justice’s announced investigation into conditions in Georgia prisons:
“Conditions of incarceration in Georgia are unacceptable, and I will continue to drive the attention and resources of the Federal government toward solutions and accountability. I applaud today’s announcement by the Department of Justice. It is an important first step toward protecting the human rights of incarcerated people in Georgia’s prisons,” Sen. Ossoff said. “I thank Attorney General Garland and Assistant Attorney General Clarke for listening as I’ve raised this issue and for taking action.”
In February, Sen. Ossoff secured a commitment from then-nominee Merrick Garland to work with the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division to secure the human rights of incarcerated people, specifically raising the treatment of incarcerated people at the South Fulton Jail in Georgia.
