Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff, a member of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement:
“I take very seriously my Constitutional responsibilities of advice and consent, and there are few nominations more significant than a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. Since President Biden nominated Judge Jackson, I have engaged diligently to understand Judge Jackson’s record and qualifications, and her approach to Constitutional law, civil rights and civil liberties, and the Court’s role in our Republic.
“I reviewed Judge Jackson’s record, met with her directly, and questioned her in public for nearly an hour over several days during her confirmation hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
“I approached Judge Jackson’s confirmation hearing with an open mind. I questioned Judge Jackson about the separation of powers and limits on government power. I asked questions to determine Judge Jackson’s approach to First Amendment protections of speech, press, assembly, and the free exercise of religion. I asked questions to determine how Judge Jackson would approach Fourth Amendment search and seizure cases as emerging technologies present new facts and circumstances. I asked questions to determine how Judge Jackson would approach cases involving the Sixth Amendment right to counsel.
“Throughout that process, Judge Jackson demonstrated a strong commitment to the Constitution, civil rights and liberties, equal justice, and the rule of law, as well as a strong understanding of relevant precedent. She described to the Committee a judicial methodology she applies in order to ensure impartiality and to uphold the rule of law.
“Judge Jackson’s qualifications as a District Judge and an Appellate Judge are impeccable. I questioned a team of investigators who reviewed her record and reputation in detail and who testified under oath that they found no information calling into question Judge Jackson’s integrity, competence, or commitment to the rule of law. To the contrary, they found that among colleagues on the bench and the bar, Judge Jackson has a sterling reputation.
“I will vote in the Judiciary Committee next week and then on the Senate floor to confirm Judge Jackson as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.”
