Washington, D.C. — Today, bipartisan legislation championed by U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff to guarantee health benefits for veterans exposed to burn pits and other toxic chemicals was signed into law.

“Today is big day for veterans in Georgia and across the country,”Sen. Ossoff said. “When I entered the Senate, I committed to working across the aisle to pass this legislation, which will strengthen health for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and today the President has signed it into law.”

Sen. Ossoff has worked relentlessly to pass the bipartisan PACT Act of 2022, which will expand and strengthen VA health care for thousands of veterans who suffer from health conditions related to burn pits and other toxic exposures, many of whom were exposed during their service in Iraq or Afghanistan.

In a fiery floor speech earlier this summer, Sen. Ossoff reminded his colleagues, “When we send Americans to war, caring for them when they return is not a favor. It’s not a good deed. It’s not a choice. It’s a sacred obligation of the U.S. government.”

“Many of the same Senators who voted to send our forces into harm’s way in Iraq and Afghanistan are still serving in this body today,” Sen. Ossoff continued“We have a sacred obligation to pass this legislation to ensure that those who served in those conflicts and anywhere around the world in service to the United States, suffering from the effects of exposure to toxins, gets the care they need through the VA.”

Earlier this summer, Sen. Ossoff briefed local leaders in Columbus and Macon on his efforts to pass this important legislation.
