Amidst Rise in Anti-Semitism, Sen. Ossoff Urges Creation of Federal Taskforce to Combat Spread

Attacks against Jewish institutions rose by 61% between 2020 and 2021

Washington, D.C.  U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is working to step-up the Federal government’s efforts to fight anti-Semitism.

Today, Sen. Ossoff and fellow members of the Bipartisan Task Forces for Combatting Anti-Semitism urged President Biden to establish a new interagency task force to address the rise in anti-Semitism across the U.S.

Sen. Ossoff and the bipartisan group called on the President to increase collaboration between all Federal agencies, including the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security, to develop a unified national strategy that will help combat the rise in hate.

According to the Anti-Defamation League, more people reported threats of harassment, vandalism, and violence against Jewish people in 2021 than any other year on record.

“With Jewish communities worldwide facing increasing discrimination, as well as threats and acts violence, we believe a whole-of-government approach is needed to effectively address the scourge of antisemitism,” Sen. Ossoff and the group wrote. “History has taught us that attacks and conspiracy theories that target Jews not only threaten Jews, but frequently grow to threaten the security of other communities and the foundations of democracy.”

The lawmakers are also pushing President Biden to work with Congress to develop a common definition of anti-Semitism that will help guide all Federal agencies.

Sen. Ossoff is committed to eradicating anti-Semitism in all forms.

In March, Sen. Ossoff gave a passionate speech on the Senate floor, encouraging his colleagues to combat the scourge of anti-Semitism at home and around the world by confirming Dr. Deborah Lipstadt to serve as United States Special Envoy for Monitoring and Combating Anti-Semitism.
