Washington D.C.–– U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is pushing to protect Georgia’s poultry industry from avian flu outbreaks.
Last week, Sens. Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock urged U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, to prioritize increased funding for research on poultry processing, poultry production, and diseases such as avian influenza currently affecting the industry.
“Additional funding for poultry research is needed to help leading scientists and researchers develop control, treatment, and containment methods and to ensure facilities have the latest technology and infrastructure to support this work,” the Senators wrote. “We look forward to working with the Department of Agriculture to support deployment of research funds supporting this important industry.”
Outbreaks of bird flu, also known as avian influenza, could have serious public health consequences and affect the industry’s production capacity. Research is critical to better understand the virus, how it spreads, and how to develop effective treatments.

Earlier this month, Sen. Ossoff delivered new resources for the University of Georgia and Fort Valley State University to strengthen Georgia’s poultry workforce.
The new resources will help Fort Valley State University develop a new poultry science major and allow UGA to purchase new technology and lab equipment to enhance the quality of Georgia’s poultry workforce.
Last year, Sens. Ossoff and Warnock, alongside a bipartisan group of Georgia’s Congressional Delegation, successfully secured new resources through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to expand Georgia’s meat-processing capacity and create new agriculture jobs in the state.
