Athens, Ga. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is delivering resources to strengthen health care for Georgians with dementia and Alzheimer’s living in rural areas.
Sen. Ossoff is delivering Federal resources to the University of Georgia’s Cognitive Aging Research and Education Center, which conducts vital research, education, and support for Alzheimer’s and dementia.
With the resources, UGA will partner with rural hospitals and clinics across the state to strengthen telemedicine infrastructure, helping patients access the care they need when living far distances from treatment facilities. This project would also aim to provide more resources, education, and support to caretakers of those suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Sen. Ossoff brought Republicans and Democrats together to deliver $500,000 for the project through this year’s bipartisan government funding package, working alongside Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock, Congressman Drew Ferguson (GA-03) and Congresswoman Lucy McBath (GA-07).
“Thousands of Georgia families experience the difficulties of caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s and dementia every year. For families living in rural areas of our state, it’s even harder to access the care they need. That’s why working alongside Senator Reverend Warnock, Congressman Ferguson, and Congresswoman McBath, we brought Republicans and Democrats together to strengthen ongoing research at UGA,” Sen. Ossoff said. “I thank Professor Lisa M. Renzi-Hammond and the University of Georgia for bringing this proposal to my office and for their leadership.”
“Our goal at UGA CARE is to eventually provide support for all Georgia families living with Alzheimer’s disease. Thanks to Senator Ossoff and Georgia’s federal legislators, we are now significantly closer to achieving that goal,” said Lisa Renzi-Hammond, associate professor and CARE Center co-director.
