Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is pressing the Trump Administration to protect Georgia seniors from scams.
In a letter to Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Sen. Ossoff demanded answers and stronger protections for Georgia seniors from the FTC as financial scams continue to rise at an alarming rate.
“The financial and emotional strain on Georgia’s seniors, as well as their caregivers, is substantial, eroding their trust in the broader financial system,” Sen. Ossoff wrote to FTC Chairman Ferguson. “Georgia’s senior population has surpassed 1.2 million, and they deserve the peace of mind that comes with financial security. Unfortunately, too many seniors are continuing to fall victim to scams that threaten their financial stability.”
Georgia ranked among the top five states most affected by financial fraud in 2023. According to FBI data, Georgia seniors have experienced significant financial stress caused by scams, which have skyrocketed from $25 million in 2020 to a staggering $92 million in 2023.
Sen. Ossoff has long championed protecting Georgia seniors and families from scams.
In March 2024, Sen. Ossoff pressed the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) on its efforts to protect seniors from financial fraud.
In 2022, Sen. Ossoff secured a commitment from Bank of America’s CEO to take action against financial schemes preying on new mothers in Georgia and across the U.S.
