Sen. Ossoff Urges Trump Administration to Unfreeze Federal Funding for Public Safety in Metro Atlanta

Washington D.C. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is warning President Trump’s Federal funding freeze could negatively impact public safety in metro Atlanta.

Today, Sen. Ossoff urged Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem to unfreeze Federal funding for the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) program, which provides Federal funding to help urban areas strengthen public safety.

“In Georgia, UASI funding provides critical investments in public safety so Georgians and visitors from around the world can safely attend and enjoy major events in Atlanta like the Super Bowl, College Football Playoff, and concerts throughout the year. Funding is also used to prepare for and respond to natural disasters,” Sen. Ossoff wrote to Secretary Noem.

In 2025 and 2026, Atlanta is poised to host some of the biggest sporting events worldwide drawing millions of visitors to the city, including the 2025 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, 6 matches of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, and 8 matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026 (including a semifinal).

“UASI funding is also important to ensuring Atlanta can safely host the World Cup semifinal in 2026, an event which promises to attract millions of visitors from around the world to Atlanta,” Sen. Ossoff continued. “DHS’s move to freeze funding from such a critical public safety program is stunning and inexplicable. DHS must immediately resume UASI reimbursements to ensure the safety of Georgians and visitors from around the world.”

Sen. Ossoff continues working to ensure Georgia families are safe, and to strengthen law enforcement preparedness.

Last year, Sen. Ossoff delivered Federal resources to prevent violent crime across Georgia and ensure families are safe. The funding helped upgrade equipment and training resources for law enforcement in Georgia.
