Sen. Ossoff Working to Secure Federal Funding to Reopen Cuthbert, GA Hospital

Cuthbert Mayor: “The entire city of Cuthbert thanks Senator Ossoff for his continued support and partnership in our efforts to reopen our hospital”

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is continuing his push to reopen Cuthbert, Georgia’s hospital, which was forced to close its doors in the middle of the pandemic due to financial strain.

In a letter to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Sen. Ossoff urged the Department to dedicate $9.3 million to help upgrade hospital infrastructure and reopen the facility.

“Reopening this hospital will have ripple effects far beyond the immediate counties of service,” Sen. Ossoff wrote. “I am pleased to lend my full support to this vital project addressing urgent issues facing rural communities in Georgia.”

Last month, Sen. Ossoff urged Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and Sec. Vilsack to make their agencies’ “complete support” available to help reopen the hospital and to work personally with him, Cuthbert Mayor Steve Whatley, and community leaders to get it done.

“The entire city of Cuthbert thanks Senator Ossoff for his continued support and partnership in our efforts to reopen our hospital,” Cuthbert Mayor Whatley said. “When Senator Ossoff came to Cuthbert last year, he pledged to help us reopen the hospital, and he and his team are working with us around the clock to get it done.”

With the closure of Southwest Georgia Regional Medical Center, before Sen. Ossoff was sworn into office, patients in Cuthbert now must drive over an hour away to receive life-saving medical care.
