Sen. Ossoff Hosts Georgia Pecan Grower Marianne Brown for State of the Union in Washington

Sen. Ossoff worked closely with Georgia Pecan Growers Association to push reduction of India’s 100% tariff on U.S. pecan exports

Last week, India announced a 70% reduction of tariffs on U.S. pecan exports

Washington, D.C. — Yesterday, U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff hosted Georgia pecan grower Marianne Brown as his honored guest for the State of the Union Address.

Brown serves as an Executive Board Member of the National Pecan Federation and Treasurer of the Georgia Pecan Growers Association.

Sen. Ossoff has been a strong advocate for Georgia farmers and Georgia’s pecan growers.

At the request of Georgia farmers, Sen. Ossoff worked behind the scenes for months with U.S. trade negotiators, Indian government officials, and the Georgia Pecan Growers Association to help open the Indian market for Georgia pecan growers.

Senators and members of Congress are allowed to bring one guest of honor to accompany them to the State of the Union Address.

“It was my honor to join Sen. Ossoff as his guest for the State of the Union,” Brown said. “India’s 100% tariff on Georgia pecan exports shouldered a huge burden on Georgia pecan growers. I’m grateful to Sen. Ossoff for his help in getting the tariffs reduced and for his continued support of Georgia growers.”

In August 2022, Sen. Ossoff personally led an economic delegation to the Republic of India to meet with key business and government leaders and continue urging for a reduction in tariffs.

Sen. Ossoff met seven times with India’s Ambassador to the U.S Taranjit Singh Sandhu over the last year, and the two agreed to work together to make improvements to the U.S.-India trade relationship.

Sen. Ossoff also met last year with Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Sarah Bianchi, who agreed at his urging to put reducing India’s high pecan tariffs at the top of the U.S.-India trade agenda.
