Legislation would supercharge domestic solar manufacturing, combat reliance on Chinese imports
Bill endorsed by Energy Sec. Granholm, Finance Chair Sen. Wyden
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff successfully negotiated inclusion of his landmark clean energy legislation in the upcoming Congressional budget measure.
Sen. Ossoff introduced the transformative Solar Energy Manufacturing for America Act this summer as a part of his continued effort to make Georgia the national leader in clean energy technology and swiftly transition to clean energy sources.
The legislation will create tens of thousands of good-paying jobs in Georgia and nationwide, transition our country to clean energy, help meet President Biden’s ambitious goal of having solar energy account for 40% of U.S. energy by 2035, and boost American energy independence.
The bill will provide tax credits for American manufacturers at every stage of the solar manufacturing supply chain, from production of polysilicon to solar cells, trackers and inverters, and fully assembled solar modules.
In a visit to Georgia last month, U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm praised the bill, calling it a “game changer” and commended Sen. Ossoff for his leadership.
“Sen. Ossoff’s great leadership in putting forward a tax credit for solar energy manufacturing in America –– that is second to none. [HisSolar Energy Manufacturing for America Act] is the game changer to be able to build out these supply chains in this whole solar industry in America,” Sec. Granholm said.
Last month, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), who chairs the powerful Senate Finance Committee with jurisdiction over clean energy tax legislation, also strongly endorsed inclusion of Sen. Ossoff’s solar legislation in the upcoming reconciliation bill, calling it a “prerequisite” for dealing with climate change.
Senators Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Michael Bennet (D-CO), and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) co-sponsored the bill in the Senate, and Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) introduced the companion bill in the U.S. House of Representatives.
