NEWS: Sens. Ossoff & Warnock Announce Historic Upgrades to Downtown Athens Through Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

Project will improve road safety, mobility, and public transportation

Athens, Ga. —U.S. Senators Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff secured historic infrastructure upgrades for downtown Athens through the bipartisan infrastructure law.

Sens. Ossoff and Warnock announced new resources to upgrade and complete street improvements to North Avenue in Downtown Athens, from the intersection of North Avenue and Willow Street to just north of SR-10 at the intersection of Freeman Drive/Collins Industrial Boulevard.

The $25 million project will resurface the road, add a shared use path for bikes, upgrade bus stops along the route, and add pedestrian traffic signals and lighting along the road.

“This project to reimagine North Avenue will improve connectivity and safety for residents in Athens,” Sen. Ossoff said.

“I’ve long said that Georgia needs a home improvement project,” said Senator Reverend Warnock. “The bipartisan infrastructure law that Senator Ossoff and I made possible did just that: investing much-needed funding to revitalize our communities. I’m pleased to see federal funding coming to Athens to ensure the city is thriving for years to come.”

“This project will create a permanent benefit to the thousands of families that live along the North Avenue corridor, particularly those for whom safe access to the center of Athens was blocked by complete lack of bike or pedestrian facilities across the Highway 10 Loop,” Athens Mayor Kelly Girtz said. “Easy access to groceries and pharmacies, along with state resources like the Department of Labor office will now be provided to these residents.”
