Brookhaven, Ga. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is delivering Federal resources to keep families in Brookhaven safe.
Sen. Ossoff is delivering funding for the Brookhaven Police Crime Scene Investigations Unit (BPD CSU) to bolster their forensic identification capability.
Sen. Ossoff is delivering $22,192 through the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance grant program to the Brookhaven Police Department, who will purchase a new Automated Fingerprint Identification System allowing them to analyze evidence in-house and keep families safe from crime.
“I am delivering these crime-fighting technology upgrades to keep families safe across Brookhaven,” Sen. Ossoff said.
“At the heart of Brookhaven’s community policing strategy is immediate action and heightened safety,” said Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst. “The City is grateful to our entire federal delegation for ensuring that our Police Department can depend on the JAG program to support the purchase of the most advanced forensic technology available and partner with us on delivering on our promise.”
“The Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System will use highly advanced digital scans that will allow our Crime Scene Investigators immediate access to state and national fingerprint databases,” said Brookhaven Police Chief Brandon Gurley. “This real time comparison to crime data will undoubtedly advance an investigation by hours or even days, leading to investigations being solved faster, getting criminals off the street faster, and making our community safer for all.”
Sen. Ossoff continues to advocate for public safety funding to combat violent crime in Atlanta.
In May, Sens. Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock introduced the Fort Gillem Defense Forensics Enhancement Act of 2023 to help build a permanent facility for the forensics investigations unit based at Fort Gillem.
Earlier this year, Sen. Ossoff delivered funding to the College Park Police Department to upgrade the College Park Police Department’s public safety technology and equipment, including a new forensic ballistic database.
Last year, Sen. Ossoff in a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing, pressed FBI Director Christopher Wray to address the violent crime crisis in Georgia and nationwide, calling on the FBI to ramp up their crime prevention and drug deterrence efforts in Georgia’s communities.
Sens. Ossoff and Chuck Grassley (R-IA) also introduced the bipartisan Justice for Murder Victims Act to help prosecute violent criminals and bring justice to homicide victims and their families.
