Sen. Ossoff Pushing IRS to Process Georgians’ Tax Refunds Faster

Washington D.C. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is working to hold the IRS accountable and ensure Georgia families receive their tax returns and refunds faster.

In a letter today, Sen Ossoff asked IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig for a detailed strategy to address the tax return backlog after hearing from Georgians about hurdles they are facing as they wait for tax refunds.

Sen. Ossoff is also working to secure funding to update the IRS’s infrastructure and software, improve customer service, and speed up the processing of returns for all Georgians.

“I urge the IRS to deploy all necessary tools, expertise, and relationships at its disposal to ensure our constituents and taxpayers who have yet to have their tax returns processed are able to move forward with the processing of their returns and receive their corresponding refunds as soon as possible,” Sen. Ossoff wrote.

As of December 31, 2021, the tax return backlog stood at 6 million unprocessed individual tax returns, which is significantly higher than usual.
