Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is pushing new bipartisan legislation to strengthen crime prevention and mental health.
Sen. Ossoff is launching a push to pass the bipartisan Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Reauthorization Act of 2022, legislation he co-sponsored to help law enforcement respond to mental health calls and emergencies and improve public safety.
“I’m focused of the safety of Georgia communities every day,” Sen. Ossoff said.
The bill would reauthorize programs to help train law enforcement officials on better responding to individuals suffering from mental health or substance abuse crises.
The bill would also allow local law enforcement agencies to support enhancements to mental health and substance abuse services, such as:
- Integrating the new 988 mental health crisis line into emergency call centers
- Deploying co-responder teams of mental health professionals with 24/7, 365 response capability
- Improving access to case management services and suicide prevention programs
