Sen. Ossoff’s championed bipartisan legislation to protect pregnant employees from workplace discrimination passes Senate
Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff secured bipartisan support in the Senate to protect pregnant workers from discrimination in the workplace.
After his year-long effort to gather Democratic and Republican support for the legislation, Sen. Ossoff successfully passed the bipartisan Pregnant Workers Fairness Act through the Senate to strengthen workplace protections for pregnant workers in Georgia and nationwide.
The bill is expected to pass the House of Representatives later today and then be signed into law.
“This bipartisan bill will ensure pregnant women in the workplace have the accommodations they deserve as they are expecting children. I brought Republicans and Democrats together to get this done,” Sen. Ossoff said.
The bipartisan bill would ensure pregnant workers have access to reasonable accommodations in the workplace, by requiring employers to set workplace environment standards for their pregnant employees, including:
- Access to food or water on the job where otherwise prohibited
- The ability for a worker to sit instead of standing
- Access to additional medical and personal breaks as needed
