Sen. Ossoff’s Legislation to Improve Efficiency at Port of Brunswick Signed into Law

Sen. Ossoff briefed leaders on the bill in March

Georgia Ports Authority: “Through these proposed upgrades, the port will attract more jobs to the region, while supporting the efficient service of larger vessels with greater capacity”

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff’s bill to improve efficiency at the Port of Brunswick is now law.

Sen. Ossoff’s Port of Brunswick Navigation Channel Improvement Act will make upgrades to the Port’s navigation channel to help increased shipping traffic safely navigate the Port — boosting capacity and helping reduce supply chain bottlenecks.

The Port is already the second busiest for roll-on roll-off cargo nationwide, and according to the Georgia Ports Authority, the expanded channel would permit newer ships to use the Port, boost efficiency, attract more investment, and create more local jobs.

“My new law will help expand capacity at the Port of Brunswick and ease pressure on supply chains. Georgia’s port infrastructure supports prosperity in Coastal Georgia, helps make our state a world leader in logistics, and is essential to the continued growth of our manufacturing sector,” Sen. Ossoff said.

Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock co-sponsored the bill with Sen. Ossoff.

“When our ports grow and thrive, so does Georgia. I speak regularly with port leaders, employees and the Army Corps of Engineers, so I understand the importance of securing these investments to make upgrades to the Port of Brunswick’s Harbor,” said Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock. “This will improve port safety and efficiency, as well as support Brunswick’s growing economy. I’ve been laser-focused on relieving supply chain issues at our ports that have contributed to rising costs for Georgia families. I look forward to continuing to work to ensure Georgia ports have the resources they need to be competitive in our global economy.”

“The Port of Brunswick serves as a vital gateway for Roll-on/Roll-off cargo, the busiest port of entry for a range of vehicles and heavy machinery in the Southeastern United States,” Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Griff Lynch said. “Through these proposed upgrades, the port will attract more jobs to the region, while supporting the efficient service of larger vessels with greater capacity. The GPA appreciates the ongoing support from Senators Ossoff and Warnock and Congressman Carter in ensuring these vital improvements will continue at the Port of Brunswick — a testament to the collaboration which continues to make Georgia the best state in the nation to do business.”

“ILA Local 1423 thanks Senators Ossoff and Warnock for passing their bill into law. Expanded capacity at the Port will create more good-paying Union jobs and boost economic activity for our city and surrounding communities,” said International Longshoreman Association Local 1423 President Kenny Thorpe. “We are grateful to Senators Ossoff and Warnock for their support!”

The bill was signed into law as part of this year’s Water Resources and Development Act reauthorization.
