Sen. Ossoff’s Push to Expand Columbus State University’s STEM & Robotics Programs Passes Congress

Columbus, Ga. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff secured bipartisan support to expand Columbus State University’s STEM and robotics programs.

Sen. Ossoff secured $635,000 to help expand the partnership between Columbus State University, its Coca-Cola Space Science Center, and the Muscogee County School District.

The funding passed the Senate and the House.

The new funding will empower Columbus State to train more teachers and expand the scope of the Space Science Center to include robotics, engineering, and earth and science education programs — helping expose more students to future careers in STEM and robotics jobs of the future.

Sen. Ossoff visited Columbus State last month and met with students in the robotics lab.

“This expansion will give children in the Chattahoochee River Valley more access to science and robotics programs at a very young age so they can get excited about this emerging field and be well equipped for their careers,” Sen. Ossoff said.

“Columbus State University is incredibly grateful to Sen. Ossoff for championing our efforts to educate the next generation of STEM professionals in areas like robotics engineering, space exploration and technology,” said CSU President Chris Markwood. “His support also underscores the importance of building strong workforce development pipelines that begin at the K-12 level and continue through undergraduate and graduate programs like ours.”

Over 50% of children who currently benefit from the Coca-Cola Space Science Center programs come from underserved populations in the Columbus region.

The Coca-Cola Space Science Center at Columbus State University provides roughly $1.36 million to $1.82 million annually in economic impact/benefit to the community. This project is estimated to bring in an additional $1 million in tourist revenues to the county. Tourism supports roughly 4,300 jobs in the region.
