Sens. Ossoff & Warnock, Rep. Williams Delivering Safety Upgrades for Pedestrians in Downtown Atlanta

Sens. Ossoff and Warnock, Congresswoman Williams deliver $30 million through the bipartisan infrastructure law for pedestrian & bike upgrades in downtown Atlanta

The new resources will transform Pryor Street and Central Avenue into safe streets and connect the Southside of Atlanta with the Southside BeltLine trail

Atlanta, Ga. — U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock and Congresswoman Nikema Williams are delivering infrastructure upgrades to make downtown Atlanta streets safer.

Sens. Ossoff and Warnock and Congresswoman Williams are delivering $30 million through the bipartisan infrastructure law’s Safe Streets for All program to improve safety for pedestrians and bikers in downtown Atlanta.

“Through the bipartisan infrastructure law, $30 million is coming to Atlanta for pedestrian and bike improvements along Pryor Street and Central Avenue to connect the south side BeltLine with neighborhoods across the South side of town and improve passenger and pedestrian safety,” said Senator Jon Ossoff. “I thank Senator Warnock, Representative Williams, Mayor Dickens, and the Atlanta City Council for putting Atlanta in a position to win through the bipartisan infrastructure law.”

“The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is already investing in Georgia’s economy and making Atlanta a safer place for pedestrians and bikers,” said Senator Reverend Warnock. “I’m thrilled to see protected bike lanes and pedestrian facilities come to Pryor Street and Central Avenue. The federal investments to connect the Southside Beltline trail to Atlanta’s downtown will help create jobs, alleviate traffic, and support Atlanta small businesses.”

“Whether you walk, drive, bike, or take MARTA, safe roads are essential. That’s why I secured this $30 million Safe Streets and Roads for All Grant. Southwest Atlanta has needed this investment and now help is on the way,” said Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05).

“Our vision of transportation in Atlanta is safe, multi-modal and sustainable,” said Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens. “These federal dollars, combined with the commitment made by voters through our Moving Atlanta Forward infrastructure program, will transform Central Avenue and Pryor Street into safe corridors that connect the Southside and the BeltLine to our Downtown. Thank you to the Biden Administration and Sen. Ossoff, Sen. Warnock and Rep. Williams for continuing to invest in making Atlanta a city built for the future.”

The new resources will implement proven safety upgrades like rectangular rapid-flashing beacons, pedestrian hybrid beacons, bicycle lanes, crosswalk lighting, roadway reconfiguration, medians, safe speed limits, edge lines, and enhanced delineation for horizontal curves at crash hot spots on the City’s high-injury network.

The Safe Streets for All program through the bipartisan infrastructure law provides grant funding for regional, local, and Tribal initiatives — from redesigned roads to better sidewalks and crosswalks — to prevent deaths and serious injuries on the nation’s roadways.

Sens. Ossoff and Warnock and Congresswoman Williams continue to deliver safety and mobility improvements for pedestrians in Atlanta. Last year, they secured $5 million for the continued development of the BeltLine Southside Trail in Atlanta to improve mobility and safety for pedestrians in the city.

Last year, Sens. Ossoff and Warnock also announced over $25 million in new resources they secured to improve road safety, mobility, and public transportation in downtown Athens through the bipartisan infrastructure law.
