Sen. Ossoff Delivering Resources to Repair Historic Springer Opera House

Columbus, Ga. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is delivering new resources to upgrade the historic Springer Opera House.

Today Sen. Ossoff announced he is delivering Federal funding to help repair the Opera House’s roof and drainage system. Funding will also be used to purchase a new chiller that will help control humidity inside the facility.

The Springer Opera House opened in 1871 and was named the State Theatre of Georgia by then-Governor Jimmy Carter. It has remained an historic part of the Columbus community to this day.

Sen. Ossoff brought Republicans and Democrats together to deliver $460,000 for the project through this year’s bipartisan government funding package.

“Built in 1871, The Springer Opera House is one of Georgia’s most precious historical landmarks. Bringing Republicans and Democrats together, I’m honored to help support local efforts to repair its roof and ventilation systems to preserve this landmark community center for generations to come.” Sen. Ossoff said. “I thank Springer Opera House Managing Director Danielle Patterson Varner for bringing this proposal to my office and for her leadership in the community.”

“As a producing theatre & non-profit entity, housed within the majesty of a 153-year-old National Historic Landmark, we are constantly challenged to find the means to maintain its physical integrity. We create amazing magic within these historic walls and also provide educational programming to underserved children through our Academy,” said Danielle Varner, Executive Producer and CEO of Springer Opera House. “The awarding of this grant will not only provide us the fiscal ability to keep this beautiful but fragile theatre in good health, but it will also help keep these walls stable & strong therefore allowing generations to continue to come and have a place to experience the wonders of a live producing theatre. I wholeheartedly believe this grant helps support the foundation on which we proudly serve our community and our great State of Georgia.”
