Washington D.C. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff today released the following statement after voting to confirm former Georgia Congressman Doug Collins as the next Secretary of Veterans Affairs (VA). Congressman Collins was confirmed 77-23.
“I congratulate Congressman Collins on his confirmation as our next VA Secretary and look forward to working with him to ensure Georgia’s veterans receive the care, support, and respect they’ve earned.”
Sen. Ossoff serves as Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, which oversees the VA’s budget.
Sen. Ossoff met with Congressman Collins during the confirmation process to discuss key priorities for improving the VA system for Georgia’s veterans, including the need to reduce wait times for community care appointments, strengthen mental health care services, and expand access to benefits in underserved areas.
Since taking office, Sen. Ossoff has championed efforts to support Georgia veterans, including passing bipartisan legislation into law to clear the backlog of veterans’ records requests, expand mental health care services, and extend VA health benefits for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans through the PACT Act.
Most recently, after receiving reports from Georgia veterans that the U.S. Postal Service is failing to deliver prescriptions and appointment notices on time, hurting their access to benefits and care, Sen. Ossoff demanded that USPS swiftly delivers prescriptions, medications, and VA appointment notices to Georgia veterans.
