Sen. Ossoff was met with respect and esteem as he engaged directly with communities and leaders across Mumbai
MUMBAI, India – U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff has had an impressively successful first few days on his over-week-long delegation to India to strengthen economic, scientific, cultural, and security ties between the United States and India.
Over the course of his visit to Mumbai, Sen. Ossoff has been met with accolades, kindness, and admiration from the Indian people, engaging directly with the vast communities that shape India’s rich culture.
Many have been impressed by the length of his visit and his commitment to building strong relationships this early in his term as U.S. Senator.
At 35 years old, Senator Ossoff is the youngest United States Senator elected in three decades. The State of Georgia, which Sen. Ossoff represents in the U.S. Senate, is home to over one hundred thousand Indian Americans.
Sen. Ossoff has spent the last few days closely listening, learning, and speaking directly with people from all walks of life in Mumbai. Each of Sen. Ossoff’s visits have been met with celebration and appreciation for the work he is doing to enhance the lives of the Indian people both in Georgia and abroad.
“I deeply appreciate the warm welcome we have felt across Mumbai in the first days of our economic delegation I’ve led to India. I look forward to more productive conversations as I work to strengthen the U.S.-India Relationship,” Sen. Ossoff said.
While in Mumbai, Sen. Ossoff hosted an intimate discussion with Jai Hind College students to hear directly from young people in India on the challenges facing their generation.
Sen. Ossoff met with community members and faith leaders across Mumbai to form a deeper connection with the people of the region, discuss mutual understandings of love and respect, and honor local religious celebrations. Senator Ossoff visited Jama Masjid, a historic Mumbai Mosque, and presented an offering in celebration of the start of Ganesh Chaturthi at the Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Temple at Prabhadevi in Mumbai.
Sen. Ossoff spent four hours in Dharavi to speak with community members and learn about their area’s vital contributions to Mumbai and the greater Indian community.
Sen. Ossoff hosted and participated in a series of meetings to strengthen economic ties between the U.S. and India and expand trade between India and the State of Georgia. Meetings included India EXIM Bank Managing Director, and Senior Executives from Aditya Birla Group, Kodak Mahindra Bank, Mahindra Group, Tata Group, and with Poonam Mahajan, Mumbai’s representative in India’s Parliament and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Sen. Ossoff also met with India-based leadership of prominent companies headquartered, or maintaining a strong presence, in Georgia.
Sen. Ossoff continues to strengthen ties between the U.S. and India.
In June, Sen. Ossoff met with India’s Ambassador to the United States, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, to highlight opportunities for continued collaboration between the two countries–addressing the top concerns facing Georgia’s Indian diaspora.
Earlier this month, Sen. Ossoff also shared a video message to the Indian people to celebrate the country’s 75th anniversary of independence.
Prior to his election, Senator Ossoff led a team that investigated and exposed corruption, war crimes, and terrorism for international news organizations. In 2021, he won a crucial underdog election to secure the Senate majority for the Democratic Party.
During his first two years in office, Senator Ossoff has written and passed legislation to strengthen civil rights, to boost domestic solar energy manufacturing, and to improve public health while leading bipartisan investigations of abuse and corruption as the Chairman of the Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.
