Sens. Ossoff & Rev. Warnock Announce Federal Investment to Upgrade Downtown Athens Infrastructure

Athens, Ga. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is delivering Federal funding to upgrade transportation and recreation infrastructure for families in Athens.

Today, Sens. Ossoff and Reverend Warnock announced a $800,000 Federal grant though the U.S. Department of Transportation to upgrade infrastructure along Hawthorne and Oglethorpe Avenues in downtown Athens.

The project aims to improve quality of life, improve safety, and increase connectivity by reconnecting communities. The Federal investment, which comes through the Inflation Reduction Act’s Neighborhood Access and Equity (NAE) Program, will go toward continued planning of the project.

“We are delivering historic resources to upgrade transportation and recreation infrastructure for Georgia families,” Sen. Ossoff said. “I thank President Biden, Vice President Harris, Secretary Buttigieg, and Assistant Secretary Coes for their support as we lead Georgia forward, and I commend Athens-Clarke County for their successful work bidding for this major award.”

Sen. Ossoff continues delivering resources to upgrade Georgia’s infrastructure.

Earlier this month, Sens. Ossoff and Warnock announced the State of Georgia will receive $122,457,266 in Federal resources for transit infrastructure upgrades across the state in Fiscal Year 2024, authorized by the bipartisan infrastructure law.

Last December, Sens. Ossoff and Reverend Warnock delivered funding through the bipartisan infrastructure law to help local governments create and execute safety action plans aimed at improving road safety and preventing deaths and injuries to drivers and pedestrians.

In 2022, Sens. Ossoff and Warnock announced new resources through the bipartisan infrastructure law to upgrade and complete street improvements to North Avenue in Downtown Athens, from the intersection of North Avenue and Willow Street to just north of SR-10 at the intersection of Freeman Drive/Collins Industrial Boulevard.
